ARTISTS WITHOUT WALLS: “SHOWCASE at the CELL THEATRE” on TUESDAY, AUGUST 27

Mosaic Dance Theater Company
Mosaic Dance Theater Company

Artists Without Walls’ growing multicultural community includes singers, dancers, painters, writers, actors, oral historians, poets, and cultural enthusiasts.  Joining us for Tuesday night’s showcase will be Samara Adell, the founder of the Mosaic Dance Theater Company,  whose objective  is not unlike Artists Without Walls’. MDTC develops and presents original dance, theater, and educational programs celebrating the rich diversity of cultures and folkloric traditions of the Mediterranean, including the Middle East, North Africa, Turkey, Greece, Italy, and Spain. The dances and music, the stories and myths, and the history and legends of this fascinating area of the world form the wellspring of inspiration for MDTC’s creative vision.  On Tuesday night, Samara and two members from MDTC’s troupe will be performing  original works from MDTC’s extensive repertoire of dance.

Marni Rice
Marni Rice

Chanteuse-Accordionist and Theater Artist Marni Rice, whose musical repertoire includes vintage French Chanson, Euro Cabaret Songs and original music will be performing songs from herEP (Extended Play) Songs for a Small Chamber, a collection of original ballads. Marni’s goal is to create and present musical and theatrical performance works for an international audience, and to bridge the gap between people across cultural and linguistic barriers.

stephanie_camera280Filmmaker and writer Stephanie Silber will be reading from The Lemon Tree, a story of  the day in the life of a little girl who’s been separated from her many siblings and sent to stay with her grandma following her mother’s collapse from nervous exhaustion. The story contemplates the question of what it means to be wounded; how trauma is experienced, and the redemptive possibility of healing.

Chris Stover
Chris Stover

Recording artist, composer and trombonist Chris Stover will be playing a brand new solo arrangement of Chico Buarque’s “Apesar de você. ” Chris said, “The song is dedicated to all of his friends in Brazil, fighting the good fight and making things happen over the last weeks – saravá, gente!”

Jenai Huff
Jenai Huff

For almost two decades Jenai Huff managed bands because she felt that music could impact the world in a positive way.  Now, with her first CD, Transitions,  released in 2011 she wants to do just that.  And certainly the world could use some positive impressions these days.  A little bit folk, a little country and a touch of bluegrass, Jenai is currently recording her second CD and will be performing songs from her new work.

Mark Donnelly will perform a monologue from the climactic scene in his one-act play The Steamfitter’s Dream. The monologue, which occurs in a Manhattan bar, centers around a middle aged, alcoholic construction worker trying to convince a young man that the drinking life is not something to aspire to. The play  was published in Best Men’s Monologues of 1998 by Smith and Kraus.

And there will be more.  The Showcase begins at 7pm at the The Cell Theater, located at 338 West 23rd St., NYC. Hope to see you there.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING ABOUT "ARTISTS WITHOUT WALLS"

Why become an Artists Without Walls’ member? Here’s what some of our friends are saying:

Eimear O'Connor
Eimear O’Connor

“The atmosphere is electric; it encourages creativity, imagination, and very importantly, friendship and discussion between like minds amongst the audience and the performers. Everybody is welcome at Artist’s Without Walls.” Eimear O’Connor, Ireland, author, Sean Keating: Art, Politics and Building the Irish Nation.

Jack O'Connell
Jack O’Connell

“This is a note of thanks for supporting my efforts through pictures and words these past months. I’ve been working as an actor for at least twenty five years now and I’ve never before been involved in anything quite like this.  AWoW is a unique blessing.  So happy to be a member.” Jack O’Connell, actor, New York

Koro Koroye

“Artists Without Walls feels like home to me. I just feel like I belong there.” Koro Koroye, poet and spoken word artist, Nigeria.

Jim Rodgers
Jim Rodgers

“I’m always amazed at the talent AWoW gathers, and I’m  honored to share the same stage with such talented artists. Once again AWoW proved they are the United Nations of the NYC cultural scene at NYC’s “Living Room.” The performers and audience included folks from Germany, Israel, Egypt, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, Ireland and the United States.  Great night!” Jim Rodgers, writer and attorney, New York

Carl Capotorto
Carl Capotorto

“Thank you so much for allowing me the opportunity to present to the group, last night.  And I was delighted to read a few pages from my book Twisted Head for the wonderfully diverse and highly sophisticated audience. It’s great work that AWoW is doing!” Carl Caportorto, “Little Paulie” in the Sopranos, New York

Colin Broderick
Colin Broderick

“It was a privilege to read for a packed house at the Artists Without Walls’ Showcase at The Cell Theatre. It feels like home to be in the midst of such talent and support. Tzila Levy

“I was very impressed by the talented individuals I met when I attended one of your “Showcases.” I would love to become a member and participate in the upcoming showcases. I am a screenwriter and playwright from Israel, with professional experience in the Israeli film and theater industry.” Tzila Levy, filmmaker, Israel.

Ed McCann
Ed McCann

“An enthusiastic, standing-room-only crowd filled the Cell Theater last night — an evening showcase of writing, acting, music, and dance. Founders Charles R. Hale and Niamh Hyland’s focus on the interests of the group’s membership suggests that members will shape AWoW’s development — an “open source” approach that foreshadows a future of diverse and experimental performances spanning multiple artistic disciplines.” Ed McCann, writer/producer/editor, New York

JOIN ARTISTS WITHOUT WALLS: “SHOWCASE at the CELL THEATRE” on WEDNESDAY, JULY 31, 7pm

968852_539655192761630_1500672249_n

There’s a fascinating line up planned for this week’s “AWoW Showcase.” Imagine your favorite singer-songwriter – with a violin and a better sense of humor. You’ve just described Deni Bonet. Not every classically-trained musician plays the violin like an air guitar! Deni Bonet is a college radio favorite who’s performed with the likes of Cyndi Lauper, R.E.M., Sarah McLachlan & Robyn Hitchcock and fits her string & vocal skills into ironic, catchy alternative pop. This past week Deni opened for the Eagles in Washington and Pittsburgh and we’re thrilled she’ll be joining us.

1026061_538279549565861_372940734_oMaggie O’Farrell’s debut novel, After You’d Gone, was published to international acclaim, and won a Betty Trask Award, while her third, The Distance Between Us, won the 2005 Somerset Maugham Award. Maggie will be discussing and reading from her recently published Instructions for a Heatwave.

303813_2067615775422_420406457_nPoet Connie Roberts, who has referred two wonderful poets in the past, Koro Koroye and Ciara Thompson, will be introducing poet Olivia Mammone a professor of creative writing at Queens College. Liv has opened for poets such as Martin Espada, Mayda del Valle, and Lemon Anderson and was an actress in and co-writer of Words: a Drama in Poetry which sold out the Gene Frankel Theater in New York City. Liv, who is also an editor for American Book Publishing, has had her poetry appear in Message in a Bottle and Wordgathering Magazine.

Dr Éimear O’Connor is an art historian, curator, lecturer, art advisor and archivist. She was born and lives in Dublin, Ireland. O’Connor began her professional career as a visual artist and has exhibited in Ireland, Denmark and North America. She specialized in site-specific work, and has also designed album covers, book covers and stage settings. Eimear will be discussing her new book titled Sean Keating: Art Politics and Building the Nation.

photo-3Pamela Herron, skilled in Butoh, commonly referred to as the “dance of darkness,” and who dances with The Vangeline Theater will be making her first appearance at an AWoW Showcase.  Butoh, which is concerned with creating movement that is distinct and different from Western influences,  is characterized by slow, controlled movement and images that are sometimes whimsical, sometimes grotesque.

IMG_0946Frequent AWoW contributor Brendan Connellan, off his recent success with his play Pompa Pompa, and just returned from his honeymoon in Japan, has written some thoughts on his honeymoon. Given Brendan’s wit and pithy observations this is sure to be both entertaining and captivating. And reuniting with Brendan, although presenting separately, is one of the stars of Pompa Pompa, Improv artist Nadia Parvez Manzoor. Nadia believes that Improv has the potential of transforming culture in a significant way. What will she be doing? Probably making it up on the fly.

IMG_3074For all that, and maybe a surprise or two, join us at The Cell Theatre, 338 West 23rd Street, Wed., 7pm. It’s sure to be a great evening.

"SPOTLIGHT ON" PLAYWRIGHT/DIRECTOR/ACTOR DON CREEDON

Don Creedon
Don Creedon

 Who is Don Creedon?

Due to recent overexposure to mystical readings (and Flan O’Brien), Don Creedon is beginning to suspect that he only exists as a product of his own imagination.  That imagination currently tells him he is a playwright, screenwriter, director, actor, and producer, originally from Dublin, Ireland and now living and working in New York.  His plays include The Lobby, Celtic Tiger Me Arse, Shackled, Divine Intervention, Dry Rot, and Guy Walks Into a Bar (winner Audience Award for Best Play 1st Irish Festival 2010).  Imagined screenplays include A Very Married Man, Mir Friends, and Work of God.  He also seems to have directed numerous other plays and is the president/founding member of Poor Mouth Theatre Company, which appears to be based in An Béal Bocht Café in Riverdale, the Bronx.

Do you have upcoming events you’d like people to attend?

A reading of a new rewrite of my first play The Lobby, an Irish comedy farce.  This reading will be public, not just in my own head.  I think.  Date and venue TBD.

Guy Walks Into a Bar - with Bill Rutkoski and Walter Michael Deforest, written and directed by Don Creedon
Guy Walks Into a Bar – with Bill Rutkoski and Walter Michael Deforest, written and directed by Don Creedon

What is your favorite dramatic work/s?

The Misanthrope, Noises Off, Loot, Juno and the Paycock, The Beauty Queen of Leenane, Much Ado About Nothing, To Be or Not to Be, Bringing Up Baby, The Philadelphia Story, Father Ted, Nurse Jackie, Arrested Development, Fawlty Towers, any Laurel & Hardy.

Who are the playwrights (and writers) you most admire?

Molière, David Ives, Christopher Durang, Joe Orton, Caryl Churchill, Beckett, Pinter, Martin McDonagh, Flan O’Brien, Jennifer Egan, Joseph Heller, Dave Eggers, Salinger, PG Wodehouse, Roddy Doyle.  Oh…and Shakespeare (esp. the comedies).

Who is your greatest inspiration and why?

Bob Dylan, for his timeless imagery, unique mode of expression, continuing relevance, complete disregard for public opinion, his “never-ending tour”, and the relentless pursuit of his vision.  I consider him today’s Shakespeare.

Shackled - with Katherine O'Sullivan, Andy Fitzpatrick and Bronagh Harmon, written and directed by Don Creedon
Shackled – with Katherine O’Sullivan, Andy Fitzpatrick and Bronagh Harmon, written and directed by Don Creedon

What are the top five things you’d like to accomplish in the next five years?

  1. Have my latest full-length plays The Lobby and Dry Rot produced outside of my head.
  2. Adapt my screenplay Work of God for the stage.
  3. Rewrite the play Spudmunchers (with Colin Broderick).
  4. Continue to produce new, original work at Poor Mouth Theatre Company—keeping the Bronx safe for theatre!
  5. Achieve nirvana.

If you could dream of trying something in the arts you haven’t tried, but would like to, what would that be?

  • A one-man show with me in it.
  • A two-man show with me playing both parts.
  • A three-man show with me playing all three parts.
  • I think you get the drift.

What was the best gift that someone gave you that inspired or facilitated an interest in your art?

An A for an English essay in secondary school.  (In Ireland, A’s for anything are quite rare—they don’t like to over-encourage!).  Before that, I didn’t know I had a “voice”.
