The Evening’s “Cast of Characters”
The members of Artists Without Walls honored Hanora O’Dea Kilkenny last week for her commitment to the arts, multiculturalism and Artists Without Walls. She and her husband, Noel Kilkenny, Consul General of Ireland, will be greatly missed. Our loss is Athens, Greece’s gain. We wish them all the best.
The following article appeared in this week’s Irish Echo. To read, click on the article below.
A lovely note from a member of the UCD Choral Scholars:
Dear Niamh and Charles,
A few weeks ago, I – with the rest of the UCD Choral Scholars – had the pleasure of performing in St. Peter’s, in the United States of America. This was a venue obtained by Artists Without Walls.
From the moment we arrived in the beautiful church, I was struck by the fine atmosphere and awesome acoustic of the building.
There was a great feeling of energy for the entire performance, as both the audience and the choir fed off the mutual energy and love of music expressed by each of the parties.
It was a delight to perform there, and I would like to express my thanks for the organisation which went into procuring this venue – an administratitive ability which was, indeed, felt throughout the tour of New England.
Sincerely,
Thomas (John) Fallows, a choral scholar who enjoyed singing for you at St. Peter’s recently!
P.S. I noticed, on your Facebook page, a tribute to the Irish poet, Seamus Heaney. Having studied Mr. Heaney’s poetry for the Leaving Certificate Examinations (and since then), I was sad to hear of his passing. The homage paid to the wordsmith was absolutely fitting, and perfectly written. Please pass on my thanks to Mrs. O’Donnell.

Artists Without Walls’ member Jenai Huff will be doing a live performance/interview on 90.3 fm WMSC. The show is ‘Radio Nowhere’ and runs from 7-10pm. Jenai will be on about 8pm for 45 min to an hour. It can also be listened to online at http://wmscradio.com./

Bernadette Fee, well-known New York fiddler leads at seisiun at Cannon’s Blackthorn, 49 North Village Ave., Rockville Centre, NY 11570-4604, today, 1-4pm.

Charles R. Hale will be presenting Breathing of an Ancestors Space and Time, a video and spoken presentation, which focuses on the importance of taking the time to find one’s family story. A simple question–Where is your baby sister buried?–sent Charles on a journey of self reflection and discovery. Today, 3pm at Molloy College, 1000 Hempstead Avenue, Rockville Centre, NY.

Intermission

Brendan Connellan and Alessia Sushko, who recently starred in Brendan’s DEATH, PLEASE! and Miguel Vias will be performing a staged reading of a short play written by Brendan called GASH. This will, no doubt, be a witty romp.

We’re pleased to announce that Irish comedian Maeve Higgins will be joining us. Here are a few reviews of Maeve’s work. “Maeve Higgins is rarer than a blessing of unicorns … she is original and relatively calm, her observations are pithy, her wit delicate, her persona oddly alluring and deftly honest.” The Irish Times, 2010 “Throughout the whole hour, the room is filled with laughter at Maeve’s risqué and highly intelligent act.” The Irish Independent. Maeve will be telling a story about a school of malevolent dolphins she came across in Rotorua, New Zealand.

Singer/songwriter Salina Sias, who performed at AWoW’s first Showcase last year, will be back previewing songs from her new album “New Day Coming,” which will have its official release day later in 2014. We’ve previewed a few of the songs and the listeners are in for a treat. Joining Salina will be cellist Noah Hoffeld.

Kate McLeod will be reading a personal essay that taps into a few memories about her last summer at a camp she attended where, as she see it, she was a “misfit.” Kate wrote the piece because she believes that it is the smallest moments in life that carve the deepest gauges in our souls and create who we become. “It’s not the big events; it’s the passing comment, the little moments,” she said.

SPIDEIL ROAD, GALWAY BAY II
Here at the margin of the world all is edge.
Rock juts against green hedge,
the sea cuts a long knife of shore,
sky meets sand in a bleared scrim,
all muffled in a cotton of fog.
Amid the blab of the pub
I’m made to feel welcome.
Then the savage cut,
sudden as blood,
struck by the stranger
or, worse, my child
irked by my joy and banter.
I fade into that fog,
walk among the ghosts
as I hear the dead tales
told of me:
she was a nuisance
and our great fool.
The wounds still fresh,
today I eye
the same sea & earth & sky
with a difference.
